Timeline of SOS

For 23 years, the Stewart family has been fighting for sharks. Learn about our story.

Rob Stewart begins with a love of photography and sharks and quits his job to start filming Sharkwater in 2002, at just 22 years old. Rob's film was released on March 23, 2007, and it took the world by storm. It inspired a global movement to fight for sharks and an end to the illegal shark fin industry while being extremely popular, winning 40 awards. Sharwater's success was just the beginning of Rob Stewart's work to fight for our planet.

Inspired by the success of his first film, Sharkwater, Rob Stewart creates his second movie, Revolution. Filming for Revolution starts as Rob sparks a beautiful change while campaigning for sharks all around the world. After months of hard work, Revolution is premiered on September 12, 2012. Revolution was a highly sucessful movie, winning 19 awards.

Rob Stewart's third film, Sharkwater, is the biggest of his three shark conservation movies. Rob began filming in early 2017, yet he couldn't finish filming himself. Rob died in 2017,  while  diving and filming in Alligator Reef, Florida. Mourning Rob, Brian and Sandy Stewart, The Rob Stewart Foundation, and Sturla Gunnarson and Nick Hector came together to finish filming and producing Sharkwater: Extinction which premiered on September 7, 2018. Rob's final movie was a worldwide messaage for conservation.

In 2019, under Justin Trudeau, Canada banned shark finning  for good.  Bill C-68, which amended the fisheries act, helped with many issues concerning our waterways and marine populations, as well as the banningd of shark finning and the import and export of shark fins. Organizations such as Oceana fought to have the law made and passed in our legislature.  Eventually, Bill C-68 passed, and with the efforts of many canadians, it's making waves. In 2024, A 10-year old boy with a dream set out to follow In his uncle's footsteps. He created SOS Shark Conservation to fight against long-lining, shark finning, the massacre of sharks, overfishing and climate change. This was just  the beginning of what was about to happen next. SOS Shark Conservation became a public website and organization in March 2024.
